Arts of Asia: Silk Road ExplorationGuided Tour + Art Workshop Grades 2–12: 2-hour program (tour + art workshop) Tour: For thousands of years people traveled the Silk Road from China to the Mediterranean to India. They crossed deserts and high mountain ranges. As they travelled they bought and sold things in Oasis towns along the way. In this tour, students will examine the benefits that the Silk Road had on civilization and see which ideas and innovations are still important today. Students will explore some of the items traded including beautiful silk robes from Uzbekistan and porcelain from China. Art Workshop: Since ancient times, the Chinese have mastered division of labor, which enabled them to fabricate complex objects and in great quantity. Inspired by this ancient modular form of creation, students will divide into small groups with specialized tasks. Together they will undertake the group creation of a harmonious piece of artwork.
