MontuMontu is a war god of Thebes. He was mentioned as early as the Old Kingdom in the Pyramid Texts, but he gained prominence during the expansionist and militaristic kings reigns of the Eleventh and Twelfth Dynasties. A number of the kings had the name Montuhotep, "Montu is content." Montu is the embodiment of the "conquering vitality" of these kings. He is depicted as a striding falcon-headed man wearing the disc of the sun, two plumes, and a rising cobra on his forehead. People wore amulets of Montu to protect themselves in battle. |
