Mut

Mut is an ancient goddess associated with Thebes. Her name comes from the same root as that of the Egyptian word for mother. She is the consort (wife) of Amun and is considered the pharaoh's symbolic mother. Mut is pictured as a woman with a human head, wearing the double crown of Egypt, and has the feather of Ma'at at her feet. She also wears a headdress in the shape of a vulture surmounted by the double crown.

Mut also appears as a lioness-headed goddess or is referred to as friendly cat that can be approached and stroked. Her sanctuary at Thebes was called Isheru; included in the hieroglyphs for Isheru is a recumbent lion.The Aegis, right, is believed to represent a mother goddess, either Mut, Hathor, or Isis.
