KhufuOld Kingdom (27002190 b.c.) Dynasty IV (25512528 b.c.) This second king of the Fourth Dynasty built the greatest pyramid in all of Egyptian history. It stands today as the last of the great Wonders of the Ancient World (at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo). Khufu was known to later Greeks as Cheops. Herodotus (484425 b.c.) tells us in his Histories that Khufu was a cruel tyrant who was hated by the Egyptians. We know little about him, but current archeology on the Giza Plateau today suggests the pyramids were not built by slave labor (or aliens). Communities of craftsmen organized by a large and efficient bureaucracy built them. |
