Aniba

Aniba is located on the west bank of the Nile in Lower Nubia. Nubia was a nation located just south of ancient Egypt. When Egypt was in control of Nubia during the New Kingdom, the Egyptians established a large outpost at Aniba and made it the Egyptian administrative capital of Lower Nubia.

Aniba was one of the sites of the 1907–1911 Lower Nubian expedition led by the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The expedition provided information on the ancient Nubian cultures and Nubia’s relationship with Egypt. On exhibit from this expedition is the Lotus Chalice (see cat. no. 72) from Aniba.
