BallasLocated on the west bank of the Nile in southern Egypt, Ballas is the site of a great predynastic cemetery. Excavations at Ballas have been important in providing information about predynastic cultures. The vast quantities of pottery found in its cemetery were used, in conjunction with finds from Naqada and Hu, to construct a sequence of dates for the Predynastic Period. On exhibit from Ballas are two jars (see cat. nos. 63b, 69a). Also, objects on exhibit
from either Ballas or Naqada are a bowl (see
cat. no. 64), a stone jar (see cat. no. 70b), the Fish Palette (see cat. no. 73a),
and the Turtle Palette (see cat. no. 73b). |
