Dendara

Located on the west bank of the Nile in southern Egypt, Dendara was a capital of the sixth district of Upper Egypt. The city’s primary deity was the sky goddess Hathor, for whom a temple was built at Dendara as part of the religious building program of the Graeco-Roman Period.

The University of Pennsylvania, in affiliation with the American Exploration Society, sent an expedition to Dendara in 1898. Another Museum expedition, from 1915 to 1918, provided information on the nobles who lived in Dendara during the transition from the Old to Middle Kingdom. Objects from Dendara on exhibit are a statue of a man (see cat. no. 47), a necklace (see cat. no. 55), and stelae (see cat. nos. 94, 99).
