Karanog

Karanog is located on the west bank of the Nile in Lower Nubia, just south of Egypt. It was the capital of Lower Nubia during Nubia’s Meroitic Period, which succeeded its Napatan Period, and was contemporaneous with Ptolemaic and Roman rule of Egypt.

Excavations at Karanog have been very important in providing information about the Meroitic culture. Karanog was one of the sites of the 1907–1911 Lower Nubian expedition led by the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The expedition provided information on the ancient Nubian cultures and Nubia’s relationship with Egypt. Objects on exhibit from the expedition to Karanog are the Inlaid Box (see cat. no. 101), necklaces (see cat. nos. 102a-f), a jar (see cat. no. 103), and the Funerary Statues (see cat. nos. 104a-c).
