Nuri

Located west of the Nile in Upper Nubia, Nuri is the site of the pyramid tombs of the Napatan, or Kushite, kings. The Napatan kings ruled a powerful Nubian state that developed when Egypt lost control of Nubia in the Twentieth Dynasty. Napatan rule briefly extended into Egypt when the Napatan kings ruled as Egypt’s Twenty-fifth Dynasty.

Although Nubia was no longer under Egypt’s control, the Napatan state was still influenced by Egypt. The pyramids at Nuri are an example of Egypt’s influence. Objects found from tombs at Nuri, such as the shabtis on exhibit (see cat. nos. 105a, b), also show an Egyptian influence.
