Tanis

Tanis is located in the eastern Nile Delta in northern Egypt. During the Twentieth and Twenty-first Dynasties, the kings ruled Lower Egypt from Tanis while the high priests of the god Amun ruled Upper Egypt from Thebes. Tanis again became the royal residence when Libyan families ruled Egypt from Tanis and Sais from the Twenty-second to Twenty-fourth Dynasties. On exhibit is the head from a statue of Osorkon II (see cat. no. 30), a Twenty-second Dynasty ruler, discovered in a temple at Tanis.
