Scholars cabinet (mungap) |
What is it?
Mungap, or scholars cabinets, are commonly referred to as document chests.
The chests are often set side by side in pairs next to tall display shelves
in the mens quarters.
Who used it?
A proper Korean scholar would spend a good deal of time using items from his chest.
Similar chests in the womens quarters may be smaller in scale and more
highly decorated.
Why does it look like this?
Mungap
are used to store papers and books, but also brushes, inkstones, and other tools
of calligraphy. The L-shaped openings in this chest are for scrolls and display
objects such as ceramics, rocks, and flowering plants.
How is it used?
Mungap are built low to the ground since Koreans traditionally sit on the floor, not
up on chairs. The simple yet elegant design of this chest makes it suitable
for a Confucian gentlemans quarters.
