| Chinese, Ming dynasty, Hongwu period (1368-1398), Jingdezhen ware, porcelain painted in underglaze copper red, Loan from the Jinglexaun Collection | ![]() |
The warm red color of this kendi was difficult to achieve technically, but Chinese porcelain makers excelled in controlling the underglaze-red pigments derived from copper. The name kendi is from the Malay language and was applied to water vessels used in Buddhist or Islamic ceremonies in Southeast Asia. | |||
