Gauguin and Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise

SEATTLE, March 27, 2012 – In order to accommodate visitors to Gauguin & Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) has announced extended hours for the final week of the show. The museum will be open from 10 am–9 pm on Monday, April 23 through Sunday, April 29. Visitors are encouraged to purchase their tickets ahead of time to secure prime timeslots that may sell out. The exhibition closes on Sunday, April 29, 2012.

SAM is the only U.S. stop for Gauguin & Polynesia. This landmark show includes about 60 of Gauguin's brilliantly hued paintings, sculptures and works on paper, which are displayed alongside an equal number of major examples of Polynesian sculpture that fueled his search for the exotic. The exhibition and its innovative approach offer new insights into the relationship between Gauguin’s art and Polynesian art and culture.

In addition, a series of related programs are taking place throughout the month of April including a free Teen Night Out on April 13.

First Friday Lecture: Miriam Kahn
Tahiti in the Shadow of Gauguin
11 am , SAM Downtown, Plestcheeff Auditorium
There are few places that evoke the image of paradise in Western imaginations as much as Tahiti. Why has Tahiti, of all the islands in the Pacific, come to fill this niche? Anthropologist Miriam Kahn will talk about the historical context of this phenomenon, the role Gauguin played in both using and creating the image of Tahiti, and how his artwork continues to influence Tahitians and life in Tahiti today. Admission is free to SAM members and adults 62+ on the first Friday of every month. For other visitors, this lecture is free with museum admission.

Caroline Vercoe and Carol Ivory on Polynesia
7 pm , SAM Downtown, Plestcheeff Auditorium
Leading scholars Dr. Caroline Vercoe, Head of the Art History Department and Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, and Dr. Carol Ivory, Professor and Associate Dean, at Washington State University, will discuss Polynesia historically and today. This keynote program is the opening event for the University of Washington (UW) Art History graduate symposium, which will take place at both the University of Washington and Seattle Art Museum. SAM Members $5; non-members $10; Seniors/Students $8. 2012 Graduate Students of Art History Symposium
Inside Out or Outside In: Who is the Other?
Morning Session: 9 am–noon (UW, Henry Art Gallery)
Afternoon Session: 2–5 pm (SAM Downtown, Nordstrom Lecture Hall)
Graduate students from the University of Washington and other emerging scholars will present at this symposium in conjunction with the exhibition Gauguin and Polynesia. This year’s theme, Inside Out or Outside In: Who is the Other? Explores topics of the “Other” as expressed through visual and material culture. Free and open to the public.

Teen Night Out
7–10 pm , SAM Downtown
Join us for a fun-filled celebration of Polynesian art and culture with live music, art making, art tours, open mic, free admission to Gauguin & Polynesia (regularly $18) and more!

Event Details:

  • Te Fare O Tamatoa presents Tahitian dancing and drumming performances by Te’a rama, including a Marquesan haka (a Polynesian traditional welcome) and a performance in the Plestcheef Auditorium.
  • All night art making activities will include: paper leis, tiki masks, and figure drawing.
  • Learn Polynesian dances with a lesson from Te Fare O Tamatoa and dress up like a Polynesian in a Pareu.
  • Get a free temporary Tahitian tattoo!
This event is free for high school aged teens and does not require a ticket or registration.
