Support the Parks and Green Spaces Levy
$145 Million for Seattle ParksThe Seattle Art Museum supports Proposition 2, the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy, an important initiative that will be on the ballot in Seattle this November. The levy will provide an additional $145 million over six years to improve our existing park system and acquire new land for future parks and give Seattleites an opportunity to renew our commitment to parks through a critical source of public investment. The approximately 100 projects identified in the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy came directly from citizen plans to address the green space needs of Seattle’s neighborhoods. The diverse range of projects in the levy includes habitat restoration, play area improvements, recreation fields, green connections and cultural facilities, supporting the many ways that Seattleites use parks. If it passes, the Parks and Green Spaces Levy will provide $9 million toward the urgently needed $22 million mechanical and seismic renovations of the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) building. The Seattle Asian Art Museum’s facility is an architectural gem for the city and a vital part of Volunteer Park, but many people do not realize that the 75-year-old landmark is owned by the City of Seattle and overseen by the Department of Parks and Recreation. The City has included the SAAM project in the Parks and green Spaces Levy because it recognizes the need for improvements to the facility to ensure its viability, as well as the safety of those who use it. It is critical that we continue to invest in parks in order to maintain the livability of our city. The 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy takes action today and leaves an enduring legacy of a livable Seattle. How to get involved
