Volunteer Program Information

Volunteers are the heart and soul of SAM; they enable the museum to engage our visitors in exciting and enriching programs and services.

The Seattle Art Museum involves hundreds of volunteers in dynamic and engaging opportunities at all three museum sites: providing customer service to visitors, supporting administrative needs for staff, working with school groups, facilitating art activities and more.

Prospective volunteers should be passionate about art, enjoy interacting with the public and able to make a six-month commitment to a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. Required orientation provided by SAM.

From coat check to docent tours, we rely on volunteers to successfully run the museum's diverse programs. Read descriptions of the volunteer positions currently available.


Museum Volunteer Guidelines

Volunteers will be expected to:
  • Make a minimum commitment of six months and establish a regular schedule.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the museum.
  • Abide by the Standards for Museum Volunteers.
  • Attend a general museum volunteer orientation and any training sessions required for your volunteer position.
  • Attend continuing education programs and museum events, as provided, to enhance your knowledge of the museum and your professional skills.
  • Collaborate with staff and other volunteers, accepting supervision and evaluation of your volunteer work.
  • Communicate with staff and volunteer leadership. Your ideas, comments and feedback are welcome.
  • Successfully pass a criminal history background check. SAM does not accept court-appointed volunteers.
