How can I sign up for a docent-led or self-guided tour for my class?

All tours must be requested at least four weeks in advance. Once your form is submitted, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your request. This is not a confirmation of your date or time; you will receive confirmation via email within two weeks of the date your request was made. Questions? Email: schooltours@seattleartmuseum.org.

Does SAM offer any professional development opportunities for teachers? Are clock hours available?

SAM’s educator programs invite teachers, administrators, parents and community educators to experience art and culture through exhibition previews and professional development workshops. Educator workshops explore interdisciplinary approaches to curriculum development, cultural literacy and methods for teaching with art objects. Workshop fees vary, and Washington State clock hours are available for most programs.


Does SAM offer ongoing art classes for children?

The museum holds parent/child workshops, drop-in art activities and family festivals throughout the year. For a description of family programs at SAM, visit our Kids & Families page or to see a listing of upcoming events go to our calendar page.

Is SAM offering summer camp this year?

SAM Camp 2011 will be three fun-filled weeks of imagination and creativity for children in Grades 1–5! Each week will be a different experience. Learn more about the schedule and how to register your child for SAM Camp.

What is the Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center?

The Ann P. Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center (TRC) is a free lending library for educators, covering all areas of art history and culture. It is located at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, 1400 East Prospect Street, Volunteer Park. The TRC offers over 4,000 resources, including curriculum guides, CDs, books, videos and more.

Is the Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center available only to teachers?

We welcome all educators—teachers, principals, homeschooling parents, art volunteers, student teachers, education students and arts educators—to use the TRC. It is FREE to register with the TRC and all are invited to open houses, teacher workshops and special seminars. Information in the Teacher Resource Center is accessible to educators for all levels in all disciplines.

Since it is located at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, does the Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center only have resources on Asian art?

No, we have resources that support all of the museum's curatorial areas—a wide range of art historical subjects and cultures.

What kind of resources does the Teacher Resource Center loan out?

The TRC has a wide variety of materials to check out, such as posters, videos, books, curriculum guides, lesson plans, games and CDs. We also have a number of Outreach Suitcases, which are checked out through the TRC.


What is the difference between Art Goes to School, art workshops and Outreach Suitcases?

Art Goes to School sends teaching artists to schools to transform classrooms into creative art studios through hour-long hands-on workshops. Art workshops are one-hour art-making activities offered in conjunction with guided school tours at any of SAM’s three locations. These museum-based activities are also facilitated by teaching artists. SAM’s Outreach Suitcases, available to TRC borrowers, contain reproductions and art objects that students can handle, examine and discuss. Outreach Suitcases are ideal for educators who wish to enhance their own art and cultural instruction with tactile objects.


I just joined the TRC. How do I borrow videos, books and other resources?

You may come to the TRC during our business hours to check out resources for up to two weeks. We are open:

Thursday and Friday: 2–5 pm
Saturday: 10 am–5 pm
Saturday Hours, June–August: 10 am–2 pm
(Or by appointment during museum hours—please contact us in advance.)

For how long can I borrow the materials?

You can check materials out for up to 14 days, with a one-time renewal on materials when you call 206.654.3186 or email your request to trc@seattleartmuseum.org.

Can I get materials online?

Our online TRC database lists all available resources, but be advised that most are available only on site.

Do the online activities the museum offers stay online?

Usually. The Seattle Art Museum has created several online activities for students and educators to use. Many of the sites are based on past special exhibitions at both SAM Downtown and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. For certain special exhibitions, we may have to take down an online activity after the show is over for copyright purposes, but we hope to still offer these on a CD or DVD for check out through the TRC.

Do I need permission to use the online activities?

All of our online activities are available for you to use for educational purposes.


How can I access digital images of objects in SAM’s collection?

Digital images of many objects in SAM’s collection are available through the museum's online collection. SAM is also working with ARTstor to include images of objects in SAM’s permanent collection in their online library, but you will have to come into the TRC to access these images. Finally, if you would like a high-resolution image of an object in SAM’s collection, please contact our Rights and Reproductions department.


How can I download images from ARTstor?

Access SAM’s subscription to ARTstor, an online digital library of art images, by coming to the TRC at the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. Trained TRC staff and volunteers can help you download these images and burn them to a disc for free. The TRC is open:
