Creatively Speaking
Between Vision and Language: The Art of Xu Bing
November 15, 2007
7–8 pm
Stimson Auditorium

For decades, contemporary artist Xu Bing has experimented with the visual elements of the written word and the formats in which they are presented, often challenging the meaning and authority of the written word. Addressing the art of the written word in conjunction with the exhibition Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art, Xu Bing will show that human response to words is more complicated than just deciphering their literal meanings.

Finally, an opportunity to be a part of the conversation! The Creatively Speaking series provides a forum for artists to explain the philosophies underlying their work and for audiences to ask the questions they rarely have a chance to ask. The Seattle Art Museum aims to be unique among cultural institutions by integrating artists into the fabric of the museum.
