Pivotal Perspectives: Conversations on Art and Culture
Looking at Africans Looking at Europeans from the 17th to the 19th Century
December 13, 2007
7–8 pm
Nordstrom Lecture Hall

Japan Envisions the West portrays how Japanese art from the 16th to the 19th century reflects Western influence. Join Professor Fémi Táíwò of Seattle University's Philosophy and Global African Studies Program for an African perspective on “Western” influence. Professor Táíwò will discuss how a people’s wisdom or visions are sedimented for sharing with later generations. Instead of depending on the written word, we might have more success by looking at artistic representations–visual, musical and verbal—and the modes of governance, religions, architecture, and philosophical traditions.

Sponsored by the African Arts Council.

Bringing together some of the most compelling thinkers on a given cultural subject, Pivotal Perspectives is a timely and innovative forum addressing pressing issues in art and society.
