Two Evenings with Thelma Schoonmaker
January 22–January 23, 2008
7:30 pm
Plestcheeff Auditorium

We proudly present another visit with Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese’s triple-Oscar-winning editor and the widow of legendary British director Michael Powell. On January 22, Schoonmaker will screen a rare new print of Powell’s Bluebeard’s Castle (1964), which combines Bartok’s music, Perrault’s fairy tale of seven secret rooms, and the art direction of Hein Heckroth (The Red Shoes). Then we’ll honor the late Deborah Kerr with Powell’s Black Narcissus (1947), in which a spirited Irish woman (Kerr) becomes a nun and confronts philosophical and emotional challenges in the high Himalayas. On January 23, Thelma will present The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Scorsese’s masterful Passion of Christ in which a doubting, worldly Jesus (Willem Dafoe) questions his role as Light of the World. Each evening lasts approximately 3 hours.
