School and Teacher Programs
What does it mean to be American? How have individual and collective identities evolved from the pre-colonial Americas, through the colonial period, through periods of heightened immigration and migration, to the present? This workshop uses primary resources and works of art from the exhibition Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery to explore these and many other questions related to United States history and material culture, encouraging educators to rethink the ways our country's history is conventionally presented in the classroom. Workshop participants receive teaching materials, four Washington State Clock Hours and lunch. Related programs: school tours, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness Educator Preview Evening.
