Art Goes to School: Building a Community of Thinkers The Puget Sound region is known for socially progressive initiatives that bring together unlikely partners to get important work done. Dr. Patricia Wasley, dean of the College of Education at the University of Washington, and Norman Rice, former mayor of Seattle, examine some of the past successes in the Puget Sound area, particularly in education and the arts. Arts educator Christine Goodheart then talks about the commonalities between arts organizations and schools; looking nationally, she gives examples of ways they have worked together to benefit students. PRESENTERS: Christine Goodheart is a consultant in the arts and education based in Rochester, NY. She is currently working on projects with the New York State Council on the Arts, VSA arts, ArtsFund and the Seattle Art Museum. She served as Executive Director of University-Community Partnerships at the University of Washington in Seattle from 2000 to 2006, working to connect the resources of the university to underserved communities statewide. From 1987 to 2000, Christine held a variety of positions at the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education, where she led the creation of the Focus Schools program and the Higher Education Collaborative. Norman B. Rice, who served as mayor of Seattle from 1989 to 1997, joined the Evans School as a distinguished practitioner-in-residence in 2006 after retiring as the CEO and president of Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle. His appointment at the Evans School is to oversee the Civic Engagement for the 21st Century Project, aimed at designing a new model for civic engagement through seminars, workshops and research. Dr. Patricia Wasley, dean of the University of Washington's College of Education, has demonstrated vigorous, creative leadership to ensure that the college continues to expand its capacity to improve public education in Washington State, through its research, its teaching and its partnership activities. A nationally recognized leader in education, Dr. Wasley has accumulated a substantial record of action-based research on the improvement of public education through teacher and administrator change and whole-school reform.
