Art Goes to School: Building a Community of Thinkers

What does quality look like in arts education? How do we know when we are doing our best work? Steve Seidel of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Project Zero has just completed The Qualities of Quality: Excellence in Arts Education and How to Achieve It, a study that aims to synthesize what is currently understood about the critical elements of high-quality arts teaching and learning. Art Education Consultant Deb Brzoska has had decades of experience designing arts schools, curricula and professional development. Together they discuss the characteristics of quality arts education.

PRESENTERS:

Steve Seidel holds the Bauman and Bryant Chair in Arts in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is director of the Arts in Education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Senior Research Associate at Project Zero. His research has examined issues in arts education, alternative assessment, project-based learning, and school reform. He is currently Principal Investigator for the Making Learning Visible project, and a Co-principal Investigator of The Qualities of Quality: Excellence in Arts Education and How to Achieve It.

Deb Brzoska, a former dancer and choreographer, is known for her lively and productive arts integration training sessions. A specialist in creative school reform, she was the founding principal of an award-winning arts-centered public school in Seattle; served as school designer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Small Schools Project; and developed a seven-year arts integration project for Hawaii’s Department of Education. She has also worked extensively with schools and arts organizations across the United States as a national teaching artist for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Brzoska specializes in arts integration and assessment and professional development for teachers, leaders and artists. She has assisted arts integration initiatives across the country for more than a decade, including for Ford Foundation grantees as a consultant for the Arts Education Partnership, the Kennedy Center and the College Board.
