Goddess of Laughter: The Comedies of Carole Lombard

Hands Across the Table (Mitchell Leisen, 1935), with Fred MacMurray, Ralph Bellamy, 81 min.

This film series spotlights the glory days of Carole Lombard, the blithe and beautiful queen of screwball comedy. Filmmakers of the Depression-haunted 1930s reacted to the gloomy climate of fear and hopelessness by celebrating the wisdom of foolishness. Maybe cultivating an insouciant outlook, witty banter, wildly impulsive gestures and a touch of moonstruck romance was the best way to stay sane in chaotic times. Carole Lombard (1908–1942) was the shining standard by which such flights of cultivated lunacy were measured. Her stunning appearance, keen intelligence and natural gift for having fun were a knockout combination. And her puckish self-delight in her own performances only enhanced the audience’s pleasure.
