Mid-century malaise spawned many alternative lifestyles, and instead of joining the conformist rat race, the two youths in Two-Lane Blacktop, played by singer James Taylor and Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson, illegally race their souped-up ’55 Chevy for money on the back roads of America. Two-Lane Blacktop (Monte Hellman, 1971), with Laurie Bird, Harry Dean Stanton, 102 min. Plus contemplative short films by Stan Brakhage, David Rimmer and Yoko Ono, 38 min. This series of three feature films and experimental short works complements the exhibition Target Practice: Painting Under Attack 1949–78.
