This lecture by Gary Radke, curatorial advisor for Michelangelo Public and Private and Dean’s Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University, explores the entire decorative program of the Sistine Chapel, offering a fuller appreciation of how Michelangelo responded to what came before him and how subsequent artists reacted to his work. When Michelangelo created his famous ceiling frescoes and the Last Judgment, he was not working on a blank slate. Other artists had already covered its walls with important paintings and inlaid its floor with elaborate geometric patterns. After he died, others supplemented, edited and "corrected" his work.

Gary Radke is the narrator of the free cell phone tour available in conjunction with the exhibition.
