My Favorite Things: Michelangelo Alexis Ertzner January 8, 2010 6:30–7 pm Fourth Floor Galleries

My Favorite Things tours bring some of the most opinionated and fascinating artists, cultural producers and community figures into the galleries to discuss their favorite works of art.

This week, SAM offers a tour with Renaissance art historian Alexis Ertzner. She recently completed her M.A. thesis at the University of Washington, focusing on the Italian Mannerist artist Francesco Salviati. Ertzner's research addresses, in part, Salviati’s engagement with the work of his contemporaries, including Michelangelo’s watershed work, the Last Judgment. Her academic interests include the evolution of Mannerist art in Italy as a response to religious reform; the use of all’antica and grotesque decoration in sacred space; the representation of the German community in Rome during the mid- to late 16th century; tapestry production in Italy during the High and Late Renaissance; and the restoration and collection of ancient sculpture in the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Ertzner will address Michelangelo’s nudes and their legacy in the 16th century and beyond. Examining the ways in which nudes were used throughout Italy and in Michelangelo’s early career, the tour will investigate the development and reception of the Last Judgment and its lasting legacy.
