SAM Creates
When musician D.W. Burnam reads or listens to lyrics, he thinks of space. When Seattle artist Gretchen Bennett reads or listens to lyrics, words emerge that relate to specific moments in time. During this two-hour project, Burnam and Bennett will lead participants in writing in reaction to sound, examining the influence of songs on the verbal formulation of personal experiences. SAM’s summer exhibitions Kurt and love fear pleasure lust pain glamour death—Andy Warhol Media Works consider identity, celebrity and the icon through a range of works and mediums. This series of three workshops at the Olympic Sculpture Park and SAM Downtown uses the exhibitions as a starting point to explore unconventional approaches to portraiture and self-portraiture with three Seattle-based artists featured in Kurt. Co-presented with the Henry Art Gallery. Other workshops in this series include: May 22: Recognizing Star Quality with Alice Wheeler July 31: Sculptural Icons with Scott Fife
