SAM's Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris
exhibition inspires this concert with commentary, as Music of Rememberance Artistic Director Mina Miller examines the power of art and music to speak against opression.
Picasso's life and art reflect his passionate engagement with world events and forces; Guernica remains one of the most powerful statements about war's barbarity and wholesale destruction. Of Guernica's time are Erwin Schuloff's "Duo" and Ernest Bloch's "Nigun". Schuloff, like Picasso, an audacious innovator, was deeply influenced by the artistic disillusionment following WWI, while Bloch left Europe for America in the 1930s, as a reaction to growing Nazi persecution. American composer Paul Schoenfield's "Sparks of Glory" confronts victomhood with courageous acts of heroism from the Holacaust.
