How have perceptions of indigenous works of art changed over time? What can we learn about indigenous cultures by examining the evolving perspectives surrounding their cultural objects and histories? Announcing SAM’s first Summer Educator Institute which explores these questions and more. Held at both SAM Downtown & the Olympic Sculpture Park, this two-day interactive, skill-building professional development opportunity will focus on SAM’s global collections spanning Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Special emphasis will be placed on the Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art from the Kaplan & Levi Collection special exhibition at SAM Downtown. Discover learning connections across disciplinary areas, time periods, cultures and places. Participants will leave inspired and equipped to carry this learning back to their students. Hear from experts, review current best practices, create curriculum for your classroom, receive personal coaching from SAM staff and learn from a network of peers. This workshop is open for educators who work in both in-school and out-of school settings. Workshop includes ten Washington State Clock hours, lunch, entrance to SAM galleries and free resources.
