2012 Graduate Students of Art History Symposium at UW April 12, 2012 9:20 am–noon Henry Art Gallery

Graduate students from the University of Washington and other emerging scholars will present at this symposium in conjunction with the exhibition Gauguin and Polynesia. This year’s theme, Inside Out or Outside In: Who is the Other? explores topics of the “Other” as expressed through visual and material culture.

Topics include Imaginary Spaces Within the Renaissance and Victorian Worlds; Altar Narratives: “Other” Histories Carved into Sixteenth-Century Convent of San Andres Calpan; The Other Body in the Room: The Dressed and Undressed Victorian Woman; Native North American Masks as Sites of Cultural Interaction: The Cultural Self as Other; and This is Just to See: The Voyeur Aesthetic and Alterity in the Poetry of William Carlos Williams.

Please note: This, the morning session, takes place at the Henry Art Gallery) while the afternoon session (takes place in the Seattle Art Museum's Nordstrom Lecture Hall)

Free and open to the public. No registration is required for the morning session.
