Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). In 35 mm, 115 min. To supplement the exhibit Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art, we present three films that explore the mystical connection between Aboriginal peoples and the land that is the sacred matrix of their past, present and future dreams. Western civilizations own real estate, whereas the Aboriginals are “owned” by the land, and express its primal forces in their temporal and spiritual lives. Picnic at Hanging Rock, one of the great cinematic experiences of ultimate mystery, finds Victorian schoolgirls gripped by an occurrence that expresses the western world's inability to grasp the deep meanings of the land they occupy. Other films in this series include: July 27: Walkabout August 10: Picnic at Hanging Rock August 17: Where the Green Ants Dream
