Join us for the next panel discussion in the Art & the Environment series, presented in close collaboration with the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs and the University of Washington College of Built Environments.

In anticipation of SAM's upcoming exhibition Elles: Women Artists from the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the conversation will focus on women in cities. Panelists will discuss how contemporary artists, landscape architects, urban planners, geographers, and those involved in development and public policy are examining, imagining, and shaping cities and women's lives in them. They will also consider the responsibilities and futures of their own vocations and why it is so critical that women contribute to urban spaces.

Moderator

  • Barbara Swift, Principal of Swift & Company Landscape Architects

Panelists

  • Sarah Bergmann, Seattle-based artist and ecological designer
  • Kim England, University of Washington Geography Professor specializing in feminist geographies and labor markets
  • Cary Moon, Director of the People's Waterfront Coalition
  • Lisa Picard, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Commercial Development

Closing Remarks

  • Thaisa Way, landscape historian and Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington

After the panel, Thaisa Way will sign copies of her book Unbounded Practice: Women and Landscape Architecture in the Early 20th Century. Books will be available for purchase at SAM SHOP.
