The Modern Moment of Chinese Sculpture
Professor Stanley Abe
October 17, 2012
7–9 pm
Stimson Auditorium

Stanley Abe, Associate Professor of Art History at Duke University, will discuss how Chinese sculpture, as we know it today, was not considered fine art in China or elsewhere until the end of the 20th century. This lecture will discuss how certain kinds of figural objects were moved into a category of fine art in China as well as Europe, the United States and Japan. Sculpture was "discovered" through the activities of many individuals and shaped by modern ideas of history, nations, culture, antiquity and fine art.
