Journalist Aung Zaw escaped to Thailand after imprisonment for participating in Myanmar’s 1988 demonstrations. There he founded The Irrawaddy, a non-profit news magazine and website, an essential independent news source. The intent was to move its operation to Myanmar when possible, a move that is now in progress.
