Sacred Poetry and Music in Muslim Cultures

Beginning with the documentary Sufi Soul: The Mystic Music of Islam, this talk by New School Professor Nargis Virani, highlights several examples of mystical poetry in performance from Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Indonesian, Western European, and North American Muslim mystical traditions.

Dr. Nargis Virani is Assistant Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at The New School in New York. A graduate of Harvard University (Ph. D. 1999), she has studied at many prestigious institutions in the Muslim world, such as the University of Jordan in Amman, the Bourguiba Institute in Tunis, and al-Azhar mosque in Cairo.

The film Sufi Soul is part of World Music Films on Tour, a non-profit distribution initiative of IMZ.
