Sobkneferu

Middle Kingdom (2040–1674 b.c.)

Dynasty XII (1790–1785 b.c.)

Due to various successional problems, a situation arose at the end of the Tenth Dynasty whereby another queen took the throne: Sobkneferu (meaning "The beauty of Sobek," the crocodile god), a sister and possibly also a wife of Amenemhet IV. She was described in her titulature as a woman pharaoh, a first in Egyptian history. A pyramid at Dashur is ascribed to her. If this attribution is correct, she didn’t use the pyramid, and some have suggested that the reason she didn’t is that her reign ended in violence. There is no direct evidence for this but the next dynasty was the beginning of the second Intermediate Period and weak central control.
