Egyptopedia

Welcome to the ancient Egyptian on-line encyclopedia. Egyptopedia is a multimedia reference guide to over 100 terms used in the exhibition. As you look at the artwork on display, several questions may come to mind: Who were the ancient Egyptians? How did they live? What inspired them to create such magnificent art? How has it managed to last so long? Who was the goddess Isis, and what is her story? Where were these ancient objects found?

An introduction to the answers are offered here, divided into five main categories. Select any of the categories below to explore the Egyptopedia:

scribe.JPG (804 bytes) To bring the terms to life, we asked three scholars, an artist, and a budding Egypt enthusiast, to define some of the terms based on their knowledge and understanding of ancient Egypt. You can watch them explore and explain the terms in the videos presented throughout this section. The scribe icon, on the left, identifies terms that are complimented with videos.

Many of these terms are in ancient languages and are difficult to pronounce. Click on the term you are viewing to hear its pronunciation.

This Egyptopedia is designed to give you a peek into the complex world of Egyptology and to introduce you to some of the wonderful stories behind the exhibition artwork. It is not a definitive guide, but rather a presentation of different points of view and a starting point for those interested in finding out more about this fascinating subject.
