Past Exhibitions
SAM’s collection is especially strong in Native American art of the Northwest Coast, including examples from Alaska, British Columbia and Washington. Several large galleries are devoted to the exhibition of ceremonial art, basketry, textiles and carvings from the Salish, Makah, Nuu-chah-nulth, Heiltsuk, Haisla, Nuxalk, Kwakwaka’wakw, Tsimshian, Haida and Tlingit cultures. Highlights include an impressive pair of house posts carved ca. 1907 by Arthur Shaughnessy and an entire gallery devoted to ceremonial masks, including works by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Mungo Martin and Willie Seaweed. This exhibition will close on December 11, 2005 to prepare for construction of the expanded Seattle Art Museum. These collection galleries will reopen in spring 2007.
