The Orchid Pavilion Gathering: Chinese Painting from the University of Michigan Museum of Art
Special Exhibition
January 14–April 2, 2006
SAAM Foster Galleries

The first exhibition of Chinese painting at SAM in fifteen years, The Orchid Pavilion Gathering will bring together paintings from the Ming and Qing dynasties (mid-fourteenth through early twentieth century) and will represent work from recognized masters as well as talented artists who are lesser known in the United States.

Coming to us from the remarkable Chinese painting collection housed at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the exhibit draws its name from a legendary literary event that occurred during the Eastern Jin dynasty (317–420). This gathering of scholars, which became an important theme in Chinese painting, is the subject of one of the finest works that will be on display.

The Orchid Pavilion Gathering: Chinese Painting from the University of Michigan Museum of Art is organized and circulated by the University of Michigan Museum of Art. This exhibition and the accompanying publication are made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund.
