Artist Sam Vernon uses stark black and white graphics to hint at hidden characters waiting to be discovered. These imaginary spirits do not step clearly into view, but prefer to reside in the shadows and crevices of dense patterning.
Among these patterns, references to art history will fade in and out of focus as the artist adapts images from historic book decorations, textiles, and masks, then mixes them in with her own inventive illustrations.
This graphic world, so full of veiled apparitions, has been chosen to align the Olympic Sculpture Park with Disguise: Masks and Global African Art, which will be presented at the Seattle Art Museum in the summer of 2015.
