During your 15 years as director of SAM, my husband, now deceased, and I watched with great admiration as you transformed SAM into a museum for people of all ages, creeds & cultures. I have had the pleasure of sharing guest passes to friends & relatives so they could share in this marvelous visual experience. Best wishes to you as you turn the page on the next wonderful chapter of your life. Posted on 6/30/2009 2:07:30 PM by Lorna Sern from Mercer Island, WA |

Mimi - Although you have received many well deserved accolades for all of the new art, new venues, and new exhibits, what has personally inspired me the most under your leadership tenure has been the profound cultural shift you led to make the museum a more open, inclusive, and welcoming place for visitors, community members, and museum volunteers. You have helped transform what was perceived as a stuffy, exclusive, and traditional institution into a vibrant and essential part of this city that is welcoming to all. Bravo! Mimi, I will always treasure our many adventures: hundreds of press interviews, photo shoots on the rooftops of skyscapers, plowing through driving rain, sleet and snowstorms to get to our speakers bureau destination...Your wonderful sense of humor, passion for the arts and inspired leadership have made an immeasurable impact on all of us! Best wishes for a wonderful new chapter. Posted on 6/9/2009 10:17:01 AM by Cara Egan from Seattle |

Dr. Gates, I met you recently at the Eagle Hill graduation in Hardwick, Ma. I went home and researched your work with the Seattle Art Museum. I am sorry to hear that you are leaving the museum but was inspired by your work. I love your dedication to the arts. As you said in your speech, the arts are so important, especially in the lives of young adults. I am getting my Masters in Arts Administration at BU and your speech inspired me greatly. Thank you again. I am sure you will be greatly missed at the museum. Your influence has been felt in Seattle and as far away as Massachusetts. Sincerely, Annalise Mecham Posted on 6/3/2009 8:55:55 AM by Annalise Mecham from Harwich, MA |
