Geoff McFetridge’s in The Mind Opens This Month at the Olympic Sculpture Park’s PACCAR Pavilion

Geoff McFetridge: in The Mind
March 29, 2008–August 8, 2010

SEATTLE, March 1, 2008 – Beginning March 29, 2008 the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park’s PACCAR Pavilion will feature the work of Los Angeles-based artist Geoff McFetridge. Entitled Geoff McFetridge: in the Mind, the installation is part of an annual series in which artist’s create site-specific projects in the pavilion. The inaugural installations by artists Pedro Reyes and Glenn Rudolph that opened in January 2007 will be on view through the first week of March, 2008.

McFetridge is well-known within the graphic design community for imagery that is economical and spare, yet powerfully communicative. McFetridge will treat the giant wall on the east side of the pavilion as an over-sized bulletin board, complete with out-of-scale thumbtacks holding up larger-than-life posters.

“Geoff developed motifs that echo many of the sculptures in the park, such as the relationship between man-made and natural forms, the interplay between two and three dimensional space and visual conundrums,” said Michael Darling, Jon and Mary Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

McFedridge’s work is based in modernist graphic sensibilities that range from graphic-designers Saul Bass to Alvin Lustig, and while McFetridge has an accomplished career in the world of graphic design, he has also shown in art galleries around the world as well as recent show at the Mu Museum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His very recognizable style has transcended the corporate branding of his commercial clientele and allowed him to also address issues that are more germane to an art audience, such as perception, abstraction, and the limits of the imagination.

McFetridge’s previous work includes art direction for the influential magazine Grand Royal (written and published by hip-hop group, Beastie Boys), graphic work for Burton Snowboards, ESPN, Nike, and Stussy, as well as fabric and print designs for fashion designer Marc Jacobs. His title designs have been featured in Sophia Coppola’s film “The Virgin Suicides” and the television show “Freaks and Geeks,” and his work is in the design collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Generous support has been provided by the Seattle Art Museum Supporters (SAMS).
