The Magic Lantern of Ingmar Bergman: Winter Light

Jan 17 2019

Seattle Art Museum

Plestcheeff Auditorium

7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

SAM and the Nordic Museum continue our centennial celebration of Swedish writer-director Ingmar Bergman. Marshalling superb actors like Liv Ullmann, Max Von Sydow, Bibi Andersson and Ingrid Bergman, and the Oscar-winning cinematography of Sven Nykvist, Bergman explores deep existential questions, and the abiding mystery and beauty of life.

About the film

A village pastor (Gunnar Bjornstrand) brings little comfort to his mistress (Ingrid Thulin), a widow (Gunnel Lindblom), and a fisherman (the majestic Max Von Sydow) afraid of nuclear anihalation. Perhaps learning to truly give of himself can make true, communal consolation possible. Digital restoration, 81 min.
