The Journey of a Korean Royal Seal
Xiaojin Wu / Curator of Japanese and Korean Art
Royal seals are prized for their precious materials and exquisite craftsmanship, but more often they are valued for their royal association. A gilt bronze seal that bears the posthumous title of King Deokjong (1438–1457) was in SAM’s collection for 52 years until its return to Korea in 2015. Take the across-continents journey of this royal seal, which had interesting twists and turns, and discuss some larger issues it has raised about collecting and provenance.
Doors open at 6:30 pm for Happy Hour in the South Hall where you can enjoy complimentary wine. Curator talks begin at 7 pm in Plestcheeff Auditorium.
The Seattle Art Museum acknowledges that we are located on the ancestral land of the Coast Salish people.
