Classic British Comedy Films: The Wrong Box

May 16 2019

Seattle Art Museum

Plestcheeff Auditorium

7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

Charmingly intimate stories, irreverence, whimsy, and wit are on rollicking display in this series of British comedy gems. Quirky people, skeptical of authority, try to get what they want in life, and they illuminate the foibles and glories of us all. With, among others, Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Joan Greenwood, Alastair Sim, Margaret Rutherford, Audrey Hepburn, and Michael Caine.

about the film

Set in the 19th century, this rollicking Larry Gelbart (MASH) adaptation of a Robert Louis Stevenson story centers on a private family lottery that two aging brothers (John Mills, Ralph Richardson) have been playing since they were boys. Whichever brother stays alive the longest will win a fortune. Mills and Richardson are surrounded by schemers and helpers who span decades of British comedy talent: Peter Sellers, Michael Caine, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Wilfrid Lawson. With the comely Nanette Newman, and a music score by John Barry, composer of the James Bond theme. Studio Archive 35mm print, 107 min.
