Joyful Mending: The Art of Japanese Boro

This workshop will begin with a guided art adventure in the galleries featuring SAM’s special exhibition, Ikat: A World of Compelling Cloth.

In the studio, families will explore Japanese Boro, the art of repairing and embellishing fabric, with teaching artist Malia Peoples then create a patchwork masterpiece with a colorful array of fabrics and embroidery floss to stitch together. All participants are invited to bring their own textiles to mend like a cotton t-shirt, canvas bag, or a pair of jeans to upcycle and mend together during this workshop.

Young Artists Workshops are designed to provide an experience tailored to the needs of families with children ages 6–10.

Tickets for the general public are $35 for one adult and up to two kids, while tickets for SAM members are $20. All additional participants—including SAM members—are $10 each.
