SUMMARY:Design Your Neighborhood Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Come see how five groups of teen designers are rethinking our built environ
ment and exploring the increasingly vital role art and imagination play in
the communities we call home. \nWith the support of SAM Education staff and
Seattle-based teaching artist Monyee Chau\, this year’s Design Your Neighb
orhood designers reimagined a 100\,000 square foot lot within walking dista
nce of SAM\, the Olympic Sculpture Park\, and the Seattle waterfront. \nThr
ough their designs\, participants responded to urgent questions around food
access and justice\, public green space\, and third places for youth in Se
attle. In August\, Design Your Neighborhood participants also met with Farm
to Table: Art\, Food\, and Identity in the Age of Impressionism curator Th
eresa Papanikolas to examine the many scenes of food cultivation\, marketpl
aces\, and dining present throughout the exhibition. These images furthered
their connections between art\, farming\, and community\, encouraging them
to investigate how food fits into life in the city.\nDesign Your Neighborh
ood—SAM's summer program for teens—is a month-long series of workshops that
culminate in a community-based design project. Designs are on view from Oc
tober 23-January 18 in the South Hall Community Gallery.
