We’ve teamed up with The New Foundation to present an improvisatory exchange between Mark Mitchell and Saya Woolfalk, two newly acquainted artists who speak to complex social issues through garments. Facilitated by curator Robin Held, this exploratory conversation will take place in Mark’s studio at the Foundation where he is currently in residence.

Mark Mitchell is a survivor and storyteller who addresses ceremony and tribute through textiles. He is the subject of the award-winning short film Burial, and presented a performance and exhibition of the same title at the Frye Art Museum in 2013. Mark is using his residency at the Foundation to begin production on a body of work called Burial II, and conduct research on interlocking systems of power, privilege, and oppression.

Saya Woolfalk is known for her multimedia exploration of hybridity, science, race, and sex. Having invented an entirely new virtual population, the Empathics, Saya invites her visionaries to chronicle their alternative view of the universe. For the Disguise exhibition at SAM, the Empathics have decided to give new life to masks in the museum’s collection in what Saya calls “a site-specific installation that blends the real with the fantastical.”
