Calder: In Motion – A Family Festival

Join us for a day of creativity, fun, and exploration at the Calder Family Festival, presented by PNC Bank. Experience the genius and wonder of Alexander Calder’s work through live performances, hands-on art activities, and in-gallery activations that bring his innovative works to life.

Scheduled Programs

11–11:30 am
Interactive Storytime
Ideal for families with children ages 3–7 years, with storyteller Tania Hino!

Noon–12:45 pm
Performance by SANCA
This dynamic youth performance from the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA) will explore movement and balance found in Calder’s work through acrobatics, dance, and much more!

1–1:45 pm
Performance by Show Brazil!
Immerse yourself in the vibrant Afro-Brazilian roots of Samba music that Alexander Calder loved. Then move along to the high-energy rhythms and beats with Eduardo Mendonça and his troupe of dancers.

2–2:35 pm
Performance Big World Breaks
Big World Breaks features guest artist D'Vonne Lewis in collaboration with the BWB Drumline! Come enjoy an interactive, intergenerational percussion presentation directed by Aaron Walker-Loud.

Learn a New Skill with SANCA
Join folks from School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA) and sharpen your balancing skills by balancing feathers, flowers, and other items.

Art Activity with Teaching Artist Rachel Kotkin
Embark on a creative adventure and transform an eclectic assortment of found materials into a sculpture that moves.

Art Activity with Teaching Artist Deycha Robinson from Pratt Fine Arts Center
Discover the magic of transformation by turning your drawings into sculptural masterpieces.

Film Screening
Come relax, take a break, and enjoy the film Le Grand Cirque Calder at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm!

Experience Live Drawing
Observe artists from Over the Line Art as they live draw scenes of balance and movement from the day.

Calder Art Cart
Visit the third floor galleries and say what's up to SAM’s Teen Arts Group (TAG) and "Share Your Collection" at the Calder pop-up cart! Visitors will get to learn fascinating contextual facts about the Shirley Family Collection and are invited to make an art activity related to the exhibition.

Admission

This FREE family festival takes place in the museum's Brotman Forum and South Hall. Festival admission does not include entry to the museum’s galleries. You may purchase admission to the galleries the day of the event or in advance. RSVPs are encouraged!
