Most famously exemplified by Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel On the Road, the American road trip has long captured the imagination of artists and writers. In this talk, we will explore how artists in SAM’s collection have played with the cultural and physical landscapes of the American highway: the vernacular of roadside attractions, the intersection of manmade and natural environments, and the shared experience of viewing the changing scenery from a car window.
